Gen F "The 2nd PANAF IMC Youth Congress":New Media and Innovations

Last Saturday, I attended this amazing event that my home org (Actm: Associations for Communications Technology Management) organized about IMC (Integrated Marketing Communications). This event is known as the Gen F: The 2nd PANAF IMC YOUTH CONGRESS. There was also a talk in this event not only about IMC but also in Advertising and Marketing. These are one of the things that I like or I’m interested in. In relation to this, I remembered two theories that were discussed in our Communication (Comm) class. These two theories are the Diffusions on Innovation Theory and the New Media Age Theory which really struck me because it has a big relevance to what most the speakers said during the talk. I learned that media before used to be centralized and caters to a general audience but now it is DEcentralized which focuses on individualized and specialized media for specific audiences. I took note of the innovations that are in demand too! For this entry, I will be drawing from the insights of some speakers and share mine as well. It’s also quite surprising that it’s relevant to us audience: the youth! So, what are these innovations that have attracted the youth? How did the speakers make the use of information through media decentralized?Who are these speakers by the way? Let's find out and read below!:)

Nowadays, there are countless innovations and new trends and, I'm glad that the speakers were able to "decentralize" the knowledge and information by sharing their expertise and experience in their own respective fields so that we "the youth" can discover our interests and find the right careers after we graduate. Good thing, the topics were diverse so each of us can know what's right for us which makes it DEcentralized and individualized to the audience. I took down notes from 12 speakers and I'll do my best to integrate what they said. When working in the industry, Sir Toff Gosingtian and Sir Paul John Pena said that you should not be afraid of being young and never get fazed by it.I noticed that it is hard to lead a group of people who are older since they have more wisdom and experience, giving them seniority over the "younglings". But,this can be challenging at the same time because this will test our courage to show them our drive, passion, willingness to learn and tougness of attitude. This will also inspire our generation to look up to them and give due recognition to their seniority since they can be great mentors too, who will inspire us to be the best we can be!

Famous blogger, Ms Tricia Gosingtian, emphasized the need of knowing who you are because this will spell how unique you are as a "brand" to consumers and customers. One's identity is crucial in the marketing place because you'll be able to identify the the type of personality you'll project in front of an ad or a group of consumers. At the same time, knowing who you are will enable you to discover your strengths and weaknesses as a person which gives a clearer view of what you can and what you cannot do.Mr Sid Maderazo who is an Art and TVC director said that we should "Think with your eyes.See with your mind.". He also told us to draw and translate ideas visually so we can see things in a bigger picture. When translating ideas visually,it is also important to bring "magic" to what you are advertising so your brand can have a "wow" effect to the viewers, having that feeling of amazement and wonder when seeing things for the first time, advised by Sir Budjette Tan who is a Deputy Executive Creative Director. He talked about comics and also emphasized the importance of remembering our history because we can know our origins, integrate it to our own totality and mix it up when making a comic book.

These ideas really surprise me because in graphic design Team Manila shared the importance of having your own voice or believing in yourself and not only your idols, moving fast, expressing an idea immediately!Starting it small can lead to something big and they told us to SHARE it to our own culture and pass it on to the next generation as well which includes us, of course! :) Sir John Chua,an advertising photographer, explained how important it is to use photography in "breaking barriers" between (disabled) children and society.Sir Angelo Sta Catalina mentioned how important certain core values (like finding your passion, realizing the competition, speaking your work for itself, using available resources and perseverance) can be in being a 3D Animator or aspiring artist.I really find Sir Vernon Go's(president and publisher of PULP magazine) presentation amusing because he only promoted some of his concerts to us and we even got free tickets! Changing the reality around you can change you as a person as well.In the process of doing so,we need to be good and influential leaders who are capable of communicating very well, sharing resources to others, creating sustainable responses. In other words, making things happen! This was stated by Sir Joseph Quesada who's a manager on education and leadership development in Ayala Foundation.

Finally,as a marketer,it is a great bonus if one has traveled to so many places which will enable you to know different cultures and learn so many things at the same time, says travel blogger Ivan Henares.I noticed that a well-traveled person can write a lot in blogs and can get marketing opportunities, especially abroad. He even said that you can even become an "ambassador" of the Philippines if you travel a lot!

The new innovations by the way included trends in beauty, fashion, technology and trend-spotting. Interesting? :) To sum it all up,our generation is more aware of what's new and modern for our taste. We have grown more sophisticated and more aware of the brands which will cater to our interests. The youth of today are in a competitive and fast-paced worlds where old rules need to be replaced by a new set of norms to change reality and keep things at its place.Technology is really the main factor for making shifts in the marketing industry:"traditional mass media to specialized and targeted media","general marketing to data-based marketing",from dominant state control to powerful consumer control, etc.I discovered that it also important to understand the consumer/customer:their needs and wants, behavior, personality, attitudes and interests.Doing so can help in integrating the marketing mix (like Public Relations,Sales,Promotions,Advertising) to create the goal of communicating a message for the people to know and be informed. As a student,it is crucial for me to update myself with my interests so I can be a great advertiser, marketer or commercial model in the future who will satisfy what the audience want and need! =)

Public Sphere:Sociology/Standards of Beauty

I suddenly remembered when I came to the Matteo Hall out of coincidence.I was surprised by what I saw because it so happened that the photo exhibit portrayed what we were also discussing in our sociology class. So,what was it that I saw which attracted my fancy and at the same time we discussed in class? It was a photo exhibit portraying the standards of beauty in the Philippine society which was influenced by Western ideas. In my Sociology and Anthropology(SA) class, we discussed how media depicted beauty nowadays. This really caught my attention because it was a venue for me to gain more knowledge and integrate what I learned from SA and the photo exhibit. It is crucial to take into consideration how showbiz and the Western Culture influenced the Philippine context of beauty since this was what the media used to mold our perceptions.

We are normally engaged by how showbiz can truly manipulate our perceptions of beauty. In the Philippines,we get attracted to celebrities who fit our own standard definition of beauty and in one of the compositions posted in the photo exhibit,I saw the names of Piolo Pascual, Bea Alonzo, Anne Curtis and a whole lot more.In the showbiz industry, one needed good looks, charm, grace, talent in acting: singing, acting and dancing, and a good personality.Well,at least, the names mentioned above have most of the attributes needed to be a successful and popular celebrity.People normally watch movies, teleseryes, shows and films noticing these good-looking and beautiful actors and actresses. These celebrities needed to be presentable in front of the camera so it can be featurable and viewable to the audience. Most of them  are usually fair, tall,muscular/curvaceous,stylish,and foreign looking blessed with a magnificent face.

As a star, they have to make sure that they stay good-looking and beautiful which they do by exercising regularly and following strict diets. They really need to so they can still be appealing to the audience and most of them have the ideal look which helps in attracting more viewers.Truly, showbiz is a main influencer of most people's sense of beauty as the audience would want to look like the actors and actresses they see on TV.They even want to be famous like them so they'll get paid by movie producers but also by advertisers.

Another big influencer to the Philippine's standards of beauty came from the Western Culture. It has a number of influences in the world today and they include fields like sports, cuisines, social interactions and beauty, the biggest of them all.The West consists of interesting and diverse places like Africa,Europe and America.Their standards by the way include a fair skin, slim figure, nice hair, an attractive face and fashionable clothing.America contributes the most to our perception of beauty. It is like a tropical fruit shake because it has "all the flavors in one cup".This means they have everything from the mags, movies, music, news and in short everything.America's perception of beauty on the other hand was also influenced by Europe and Africa

Europe is prominently known to be the home of many beautiful people; where good-looking and hot actors and models come from.It is also one of the most fashionable places in the world.French and Italian people have great taste for fashion and that's why they have Milan and Paris Fashion Week.Europeans have defined noses and chins,good-looking faces and a good sense of fashion, and also have an accent when they talk (which some find sexy and hot).

Africans have a say too in influencing the Philippine's standards of beauty. They compose of what they wear, long neck;reason why they wear several rings around their neck, dark skin color, wearing accessories like earrings and bracelet;the more you have, the more beautiful you are,and having traits like strength and independence.Diversity is something that makes the Western Culture unique after all, they say that there is "unity in diversity".

More important, every person, country and culture each have a unique set of traits that define beauty which the media portrays, features, advertises and presents to the people.I also learned that "Beauty is not real.Beauty only exists in perception".What would also support that statement is "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, not depending on the trending".The trend may have its standards but it is still you who can define your own look, style, taste and your perception of beauty.Over time, our own perceptions(not the beholder) of good looks and beauty will get more refined as we get to expose ourselves to different standards.Beauty is really subjective and is a "socially constructed reality"(phrase which I learned from SA). =D Therefore, what we can also do is to appreciate ourselves according to how we look, carry ourselves, dress and relate with others as there are more important things than beauty itself and besides, beauty comes from within too not only outside! =D

Influence of Mass Media

Mass media are things that engage in everyday of our lives. We encounter them in the workplace, school, home, and community. In short, everywhere! We are influenced by their effects and these in turn shape our thoughts, ideas, perceptions and beliefs. In turn, this will help us understand why we have different personalities in the process of discovering media in the technological world. In this case,I will dwell on some of the forms of mass media and explain how important it is to me.By the way,"mass media refer to the print and electronic forms of communication used to send messages to widespread audiences".

Print media include things like books, textbooks, magazines and newspapers.Electronic media on the other hand focus on the Internet, motion pictures and even advertising.First,my books and textbooks are normally the things I need for school. They help me gain knowledge and information about the subjects I take. They're normally the main sources of my understanding because I always have to read them for my assignments in most subjects.

Newspapers are the second sources of print media I have to check for the latest updates in current events.I normally read newspapers to get myself updated in economic trends.I have to take note of the exchange and foreign rates, and even the headlines for the main news.I also have to browse the increase and decrease of the stock numbers so I can observe the changes in the percent of these numbers.

Magazines are the third type of print media I read during my leisure time.I check the latest magazines for the best styles, trends, clothing, sports, grooming and any other articles I read related to daily life.I like reading the articles related to daily life because there are so many things I can pick up and learn to improve myself as a person.

Finally, the internet and the advertisements are my favorite sources of information for the electronic media. The internet is the best way to get access to information and knowledge.I get the chance to also connect with my friends and other people I know, particularly on facebook.I use facebook in the internet to relate with friends, relatives and blockmates.Facebook is a great way of expressing yourself, posting stats and shout-outs,creating albums with fantastic pictures and even checking out our homework and asking help for it as well.Advertisements help me get aware of the latest promos and the craziest stuff around seen in billboards, flyers, posters, videos and so much more.

These are some the forms of media I encounter as a student and a person.I noticed that I am not as keen in exposing myself to mass media so this will be my chance of getting more experience in it so I will be more well-informed about what's going on around me especially in current events.I also realized that technology is an important tool in sending messages through the media.I learned how technology can help in the efficiency in the producing and sending of messages. This has inspired me to be more techie or tech-savvy and I really want to become one because this can help in my future careers.I hope to learn more and understand the world of mass media in my daily life! :D

Discovering and understanding an organization's culture(like ACTM for example or any other org:D)

I learned from my previous lectures that in order to understand an organization it must be viewed through "cultural lens".By viewing it in cultural lens, one has to see it according to the culture of that organization. We even have to immerse ourselves in it to appreciate and understand where different people come from.Based from experience,I really think that going, participating and joining in an org's events is one of the crucial factors for understanding cultures whether an org or something else. For this week,I participated in the activities and events of my orgs particularly my home org,Actm.Actm(Associations for Communications Technology Management) is the home organization of Comtech students. Its core competency is Integrated Marketing Communications. As a member of this org,I oblige myself to learn more about my org and its competency, become more exposed in its activities and active in all its events as much as possible to make up for not being active during my freshman year. So,what were these amazing events I have attended this week?I attended 3 for now and these events were Tambay Week,Alumni Exchange and the Panorama IMC seminar.Without further ado, let's keep the dice rolling and get this started with! :)

The first event,Tambay Week,is a week devoted to the members of Actm so they can have a chance to bond with other Actm-ers.This event would help in fostering camaraderie through a series of games and activities. One game I joined is Jenga where you will form a pile of blocks and the participants would roll a dice. After rolling the dice, the person gets a chance of taking one pile based on the dice's color, without making the rest fall.If the pile falls while taking one block, then it's a game over!I also played monopoly and in order to win,one has to form 3 sets of properties and there has to be 3 in each set.I had a hard time when I first played and I felt really touched when the other participants even volunteered in helping me understand the game.At least, even though I was having a hard time,I managed to build a set and almost win the game. One even noted that I was "sneaky" since I was silently building my set and almost on the brink of winning the game with the others barely noticing it!:)If I wouldn't be playing these games,I would be conversing happily with my other orgmates and blockmates or be alone silently resting and reading a book.I learned significant pieces of advice  from senior orgmates just by talking to them.I curiously watched other people play Xbox video games both in Actm in Meco(home org of Management Economics majors) since the latter had a Tambay Week too. These activities were the bridge that helped me in making good rapport to establish a meaningful connection.I also felt comfortable bonding with them in the process.

The second event I participated in was the Alumni Exchange where a group of  Comtech students would  meet a corresponding alumnus. This gives the students a chance to see what the careers and jobs of a Comtech graduate are and be under the apprenticeship and tutelage of their alumni. The alumnus would also assign a task after giving the students a guided tour.It also prepares them for a life beyond Communications,IT and Marketing. The participants were to be led by a volunteer/chaperone.The volunteers have a greater responsibility because they have to contact and coordinate with their alumnus and participants.I was assigned as a volunteer but I missed this chance of being one because I was busy with my studies so I just became a participant and I actually discovered that I'm not yet prepared for that responsibility so I felt I was on the right track! :D Anyway, our alumnae was Ms. Esme Fong. She works at Chevron in Makati City.We got meet her workmates, listen to her and her colleagues' talk, eat and converse along the way.We got to meet other people in her workplace. After which, our task was to join them in their "stretch break".We stretched for a couple of minutes then we answered an evaluation form to give our feedback. We finally thanked Ms Esme for giving us her time since we learned about so many things about Chevron and its jobs which are centered on IT.

Finally,I joined the Panorama IMC Seminar which allowed me to be familiarized about advertising, effective IMC and digital marketing. It was to be led by 3 speakers namely Mr Nate Dy-Liaco of Publicis Manila,Mr Efi De Castro of Century Pacific and Mr Carlo Ople of  TV5.They all gave wonderful talks and this helped me gain more knowledge about IMC.Because of that,I'm beginning to like my course and I hope to gain more wisdom, understanding and insights about IMC aside from knowledge.Good thing,I took down notes and listened attentively despite the distractions. We had a break for a short while to eat and mingle with other people. The pieces of advice they shared will guide along the way as I discover more and more about it.And this was also open to other universities like La Salle,UST and UP.So,one of the things I learned from the speakers altogether was knowing your consumer and their interests, learning something new each day, reinventing yourself, being curious, developing your skills and competencies(but give more priority to your competency).I also received happily my certificate of attendance for successfully being a part of it.We had a picture taking after the talks and I believed everyone went home with a smile in their faces since it was really great and I learned a lot.

So,joining an event in your org is really a great chance in discovering its culture through cultural lens.Orgs help you develop a balanced and well-rounded life outside the classroom.Orgs balances theories and concepts learned in class with experience and practice in their activities. It's a great opportunity for developing your skills and talents, meeting new friends, knowing how your career or job will be and developing the skill of seeing things through your cultural lens.Cultural lens (for me) is looking at another's culture with fresh eyes and allowing yourself to be discreetly assimilated by it without losing your identity but discovering more of yourself in the process. Why? Because, you get to know their traits, behaviors, beliefs, values and so many things. As I immerse myself in more events in Actm and my other orgs,I will learn a lot about their culture and this will help me understand cultural diversities and differences more importantly, their organizational life/lifestyle!Of course,I have to expose myself in more of its activities and events as well as being more active in it so I can make the most of my experiences in Actm and the rest of my orgs along with my blockmates and orgmates! :D

How I'm defined as an Atenean student through Structuration

I've been an Atenean for 2 years now and I have 2 years left before I graduate.I can say that what has been defining me as an Atenean are not only its culture, activities, lifestyle and values but also its rules and regulations even its resources, perhaps.By browsing through the student handbook of Ateneo,I have become more aware of what has been shaping me as an Atenean student and what will also shape me in the future as well. This I have experienced in my 2-year stay in the Ateneo and will be experiencing it for 2 years more. These rules have helped me in my formation, morality and conduct.I took note of the messages of VP John Vergara,Sir Eduardo Calasanz from the ADAA and Sir Rene San Andres from the ADSA.There messages have inspired me to read the handbook, hehe! :D But more importantly,to understand what it means to be an Atenean by heart, mind and soul.Based on what they said,I learned from the rules laid out in the handbook that they're meant to help in forming one's character so he or she can become men and women for others, serve for the greater glory of God and for the greater service of mankind.Although the rules can stifle our freedom sometimes,by following it wholeheartedly,we can use that freedom in exploring the available opportunities for our personal growth and development. These also help us in growing to our full potential. So,after sharing what these rules can do in one's life, what are these rules that have developed me as a person and a student of the Ateneo way along with its resources?Let me name some of them to get this started with. :D

One regulation that I am already applying is the consulting of professors, guidance counselors and campus ministers.By doing so,these people can mentor me and "take me along" so I can gain wisdom, understanding and knowledge about my subjects and daily life as well. They have guided me intellectually, morally, emotionally, physically and spiritually.Because of this,I became more open to learning, expanding my curiosity as a result.I am normally a curious and inquisitive person who loves to learn. With their guidance and patience,I have become wiser as an Atenean student and will become wiser as I immerse myself with these helpful people.

I also got to understand the importance of wearing my ID.By wearing it,you identify yourself as an Atenean and a student in the campus. It is used to separate the students from the strangers.Speaking about strangers, this rule is very helpful because you would be able to easily identify strangers who don't wear IDs and would want to even hold-up students within the campus. Our IDs also prevent us from getting caught by guards and taking note of these would lead to major offenses. It is also helpful in getting the privilege to enter the Rizal Library (and other facilities) and borrow books from it as well.

I can consider the Rizal Library as a resource that helped me as well.It has helped in my quest for knowledge and understanding. It has helped a lot in my researches too.I want to be a well-read Atenean like Jose Rizal so this resource is an opportunity for me to explore the fun of learning and excitement in immersing myself there.I can also use it as a rest place whenever I need to take a nap for a while before my next subject to gain strength and energy.

These are some of the rules and resources that I have already went through as a student of Ateneo. It is my job as an Atenean to become well-advised with more of its rules and regulations along with its resources so I can venture out more avenues for my learning.I have yet to understand too its long-lasting implications that will help me survive and enjoy my stay in ADMU especially that I have 2 years left.By reading my handbook, following them will be second nature to me and the "expected behavior" of a true Atenean will arise slowly but surely. After all,the handbook is a primer that I need to cultivate my values, skills, character, intellect, potential and faith for the "greater glory of God and the greater service of others"! :D

Adapting to new structures and environments

Yesterday was a blast and I had lots of fun because of my general assembly in Ajma.It was a great learning experience that I won't forget because I learned something new and that is the skill of adapting or adjusting to new structures and more importantly, basic marketing skills. We normally have to adjust when we are in new surroundings so we can get used to their structures.Adapting is an important skill because it's necessary for our survival and learning.I also remembered my experiences during my freshman year because it was a great welcoming to the Ateneo community and culture.By getting used to these structures,I got a feel how things should be and got myself to be familiar with it as well. Therefore, structuration is an opportunity for me to practice my skills in adapting to my own environment and in the process get assimilated or immersed to new behaviors or actions so I can also use it in social events.Right now,I want to elaborate further on my freshman year and my general assembly(GA) in Ajma (yesterday)! :D

My first experience in adapting was when I was in first year.I was welcomed by my seniors along with my blockmates during the Orsem which is one of the most popular events in the Ateneo. We had activities, games, bonding and icebreakers with each other. We also ate and hanged out when we all had free time and long breaks. We submitted and coped up with the requirements our profs instructed us to do.Each prof had their own requirements and he or she expected us to follow. We experienced our own doses of hell weeks, challenging long tests, backbreaking research papers and lots of home works and quizzes. All of these made us stretch our limits. After a while,we finally got the hang of the Ateneo way and that made us certified Ateneans in the process! :D

My second experience in adapting just happened recently! I was so glad to be part of Ajma's GA which was "Marketing Myself" talk led by two speakers,Tricia Gosingtian and Ms Bing Paraguas. Before the two speakers came,we were entertained by two hosts, both male and female who are senior members of Ajma.I got attracted to the female host because she was engaging, persuasive, sophisticated and outgoing!=D I felt a bit nervous when I came in because I went there all by myself.Good thing,I saw a friend whom I got to talk to which made me feel at ease.I had to get used to the outgoing structure of Ajma because I'm really a reserved and shy person, quite the opposite of what it means to be a marketing person.Nevertheless,I forced myself to structure my own behavior based on the lively ambience of my GA.I proved that during a game called ""Making First Impressions in 30 seconds".We taped a bond paper on our back and the speaker told us to write our own first impressions of the people we have met in the GA.I really got out of my shell and started talking to the other members and wrote my own impressions on the other members. After the game, the speaker asked us which trait surprised us the most. She asked and I told her,"outgoing" to which she asked "Bakit, hindi ka outgoing?"I just nodded which means a "yes" and the others laughed!:D I was personally surprised too because I got good impressions and they think that I'm "outgoing and confident" despite the fact that I was shy!The speaker also gave us tips on how we can make good first impressions when we apply for a job.I also asked her for more tips after the GA and she, along with her former student and a senior, told me to throw myself in situations where I can go out of myself. On the other hand, the senior advised me to "overdress" and take up an elective in public speaking/presentation.That GA is something I'll really never forget!:D

The system and structure of Ajma enabled me to become a better marketing person which inspired me while that of the Ateneo inspired me to be a more academically prepared and well-educated Atenean student. The new traits, behaviors, attitudes and actions were a result of fresh act, which is the development of something new as a result of behaviors or actions. So,what is that "new thing" I learned or developed? What I learned are the skills of adapting and making a good impression.Right now,I also have to engage myself in my other orgs and groups to keep learning new things.I learned that good communication is also vital in getting used to the structures of orgs and groups.By assimilating myself to these things,I challenge my own concept of myself.Once I do that,I will get used to novel situations, gain control/size up my challenges and problems, overcome as well and finally,be successful in all my endeavors! =D

Valuing one's organizations (orgs)

According to the definition of what an org is,"an organization is a group of people with a particular purpose." In the Ateneo, all of us since first year have been told to join and value orgs.At the same time,we also have to be active members in that organization we're in.In my case,I realized that I missed this great chance of being active when I was a freshman.I had a wrong perception that my home org (ACTM) was only a party org and that it was only limited to parties and superficial activities but I was wrong.I was looking for something more substantial and little did I know those parties and activities that I labeled as "superficial" were actually the trainings that I've been looking for!I felt bad when I said that because it took a toll on me.The parties and the other activities I call "superficial" are one of the things that define an organization because it means that people love hanging out, spending time with each other, meeting new friends, extending one's network and developing one's talents and abilities.

Orgs help in developing a person fully by exposing them to their likes and interests. It's only this second year that I got to know and discover the orgs that I wanted to be part of.From the orgs I joined in,I also discovered my interests on the way and how it is related to my course and what I like!Either way,my likes and interests are slowly beginning to crystallize or become crystal clear. The orgs that I joined included my home org,Actm(Association for Communications Technology Management),Ajma(Ateneo Junior Marketing Association),Acomm(Ateneo Communication for communication majors),Cosa(Collegiate Society of Advertising) and Acmg(Ateneo College Ministry Group). This totals to 5 orgs in all.

The first four(Actm,Ajma,Acomm,Cosa) are the ones related to my course and future career. So,how about Acmg?Is it really related to what I like and my course as I have mentioned a while ago?Well,I also wanted to be part of Acmg since I wanted to maintain my relationships with my old friends, develop my spirituality and serve through singing and lectoring.Acmg may not be related to my course and career but I still joined anyway because of the reasons mentioned above.I felt inspired because these orgs can now help me focus in developing my abilities, skills, talents, knowledge in the areas I like.I realized though that you would have an edge in your org if you already had experience.Unfortunately, even though I'm becoming aware of what I like,I didn't have the experience as compared to my other orgmates!:D

So right now,I'm relying on my curiosity, passion and enthusiasm TO LEARN from my seniors and experienced orgmates!=)As I got my self exposed in my orgs,I slowly picked up the values that I learned from them. These values would guide me in my journey of developing myself in what I like. These values would also be my guiding principles so that I would always do what's right.Of course, there are rules that I have to follow so I can participate in the goals that my orgs would aspire to reach.I'm also doing my best in befriending people so I can learn from them. The process of social integration will come in handy for me because this can give me the chance to get the mutual cooperation of my orgmates in order for us to understand each other. As I learn from my orgmates, their expectations for me would evolve and I have to get myself prepared for that.In the meantime,I'm enjoying the privilege of being a new member;Learning new things and discovering important values and lessons that I may give myself back in return for what they have taught me.

Orgs are really a great way of diverting from the stress of academics.I'm already seeing its importance and I'm maximizing the time that I have for these orgs.My goal is to also refine my knowledge, skills, talents and abilities through the help of my orgs so I can get ready for promising careers and good jobs!I hope to learn a lot and give back as I mature in time so I can fully realize my reason and purpose of joining these orgs!=)

Social Interactions

Meeting new people and relating with them is a wonderful way to reduce uncertainties and make meaningful social exchanges. Some are very nervous in talking to people, don't know what to say or how to "break the ice".Others find it natural to easily blend in with anyone or with any group because they're outgoing, gregarious and expressive. So,what about those who are reserved....shy......quiet......or those who don't talk to people easily? Can they also enjoy the fun and excitement of mingling with people?Well, definitely yeah! What they can do is to understand the theories on reducing uncertainties and making social exchanges. In my case,I am really a shy person and I'm working hard to improve my people skills and so far,I'm enjoying the process and learning new things.Right now,I want to share my experiences during Raiyne's birthday party and high school soiree with my batch mates.

Yesterday was a great day because our block mate,Raiyne, had a celebration in Fiamma Fresh Fridays,a high-end bar.I'm happy to witness her birthday together with my other block mates. She said that she didn't want a princess debut because there would only be a limited number people who would go.Meaning, selected people would only go.When she said that during our SA(Sociology and Anthropology) class,I felt touched since it was generous of her to invite so many people to her party.I was the first one to arrive and this made me a bit restless because the guestlist (with my name on it) hasn't arrived yet so I can't go in and I had no one to be with.Good thing, one of my blockmates,Meryl, arrived after a short while but she was with her friends so I'm still left alone. At least,"better have ONE block mate with me than none"! :D A few minutes went by and my other block mates arrived already arrived with the guestlist. Finally!I was now with them at last!I reduced my uncertainty by talking to my block mates and asked them questions so I can seek information.I slowly getting at ease in the party because I was hanging-out with my block mates. The music was so lively and loud that they danced along with it and I only danced a bit, hehe. We also drank and some of my block mates got drunk and tipsy. After bidding Raiyne good bye,my friend,Gia,dropped me off at my home. That was something I will never forget in my life!

I also remember as one of my memorable experiences the soiree we had in the house of our classmate's friend at Corinthian Gardens who was an ICAn.I went there with my friend going there because I didn't want being alone. We finally arrived and I was so astounded since her house was so big, lovely and conducive for parties and other events.I was about to get a drink when my friend introduced me to her since she was the hostess.Almost getting a drink,I heard her call "Migi" and I thought it was me so I really turned my back but she was referring to my classmate,Mike whom she calls "Migi".So,she said "uyy, tumingin siya"...This flattered me and my face turned a bit sour because it was really said in a flattering way.Good thing,I composed myself or else I could have gotten found out! =))Anyway,I also made an effort in relating with the other girls in the soiree to get rid of my shyness and nervousness. And,it turned out well because I was able to reduce the uncertainties and make good social exchanges.I just have to go out more often according to one classmate of mine.I kept quiet for a while and used passive strategies like observing how the people there behaved so I can easily relate with them.I did this NOT to stalk them ah,haha! It turned out very well, enjoying the rest of the night with my classmates and the girls in that soiree.I went home with a smile in my face, remembering that soiree as the first and last during my senior year.

Maybe, some of you guys could have asked who this girl was?She was third year then and me,fourth  year, both high school students.Right now, she's freshman college student and me,a sophomore college student.Did I find her attractive?Well, yes. :D I also found her a gracious and sophisticated person who knows how to engage people's attention and can be flattering,I think....based from that experience with her.I can't tell the name though since some of my friends might know who she is and they'll tease me.But anyway, the details include her being an ICAn during highschool and living in Corinthian Gardens, hehe.

So much for these memories!Every time I think about these meaninful experiences,it inspires me because I know I can handle my shyness and do something about it,even my block mates found me a shy person.I know that I have made a big improvement in relating with people.By mastering and applying the theories,I can will be smooth and suave in meeting new people and relating with them. All I have to do is to reduce uncertainties and make meaningful social exchanges! =))

My experience with inconsistency.....SMOKING:)

Have you ever wondered what it feels like to do something that you don't like but you have to? Did that experience help or not? Did it affect you as a person? Anyway, I remembered giving in to the urges of my friends during my high school because of one thing:peer pressure. Peer pressure can be good if it inspires the person, benefits him/her and is still consistent with his/her beliefs. On the other hand, it's not advisable to give in if it is against one's beliefs. In my case, I gave in and even though it was against my values or beliefs, I enjoyed it because I was able to benefit from it somehow.....So,where did I allow my friends to urge me in doing something I don't like? Smoking.....

So,during my second year high school,I was on my way home from La Salle when I met up with two of my friends. One was my classmate and the other was just my batchmate. They told me they had plans of playing Billiards at Robinsons Galleria. But,I told them I couldn't join them because I didn't have enought money. So, they offered me one condition-that they would me treat me out in billiards if I would finish one stick of cigarette! At first, I was really didn't like it because I never smoke in my life and I'm an athlete.I gave in anyway but I wasn't able to finish even half a stick. It was a good thing my friends were really understanding and accepted me that way as well.I had so much fun with them and it was really a meaningful experience though.

I learned from this experience that we all have our own beliefs, attitudes and values. And,it would really be uncomfortable if you would go against your cognitions (just like in my case which is smoking). I mean you would have a hard time doing it and chances are you have to make a stand on such situations. So,it is advisable to check if it would be harmful on your part to give in to peer pressure or not.I may have gone against my belief that it is unhealthy to smoke but I gave in because my friends were understanding and I wasn't harmed. :)

People-Reading...Enjoying how it is to relate with people based on who they are

The lectures in our Comm class as I have observed are becoming more and more interesting. What really got me engaged for this week's lecture was the Kinesic Theory. This was introduced by Birdwhistell,Ekman and Friesen. Now, I also liked this theory because it can give me a chance to understand people's body languages and gestures. In the process of understanding it, I would be able to apply the DISC behavioral approach my mom taught me to know myself and others, and be able to adapt to my own environment. :D

The "D" stands for Dominance and refer to people who are very controlling and authoritative.I suddenly remember my prefects who always get mad at me before when I wouldn't follow their instructions. They really want to get things done very quickly and are results-oriented people. I normally get intimidated in their presence sometimes but at least I'll get used to them gradually.

The "I" depicts those who are an "Influence"-er! In my opinion,I view them as party-goers,very lively, sociable and who have charisma.I enjoy their company because they really engage me well. I just don't like the fact that they can be very manipulative sometimes. In this case,I just have to be careful when dealing with them so I wouldn't be vulnerable.

The "S" is for those who are Steady.I really feel calm and relaxed when I relate with them since they're loyal,soft-spoken,sincere and supportive. What I just don't like in them is the fact that they're not as assertive or tough in critical times.

Finally, the "C" stands for those who're Conscientious.I'm really happy to know that I'm one of them and this inspires me.They value perfection, focused, analytical and task-oriented.They can be overly-critical of themselves and others when they get pressured.Realizing this,it is important for me to be more accepting of myself and others to have a harmonoius relationship with them.

So,guys, knowing these types, which of them best describe you?By knowing who youare, you can fully understand yourself and others to create a more meaningful relationship with one another! :D

The Types of Communication Scholarship:)

A theory is first discovered when you observe and ask questions then you get answers. But,I discovered that curiousity can help in formulating a theory because it opens the mind to learn new ideas and helps generate new concepts. When we are curious,we normally ask questions, right? So,because of that,it is crucial to practice the skill asking questions which leads to scholarship or knowledge. They're divided into three types:Scientific,Humanistic and Socio-scientific.

Scientific scholarship relates science as an objective field of study. It is "associated with objectivity, standardization and generalizability".This is normally used by scientists who use the data and information scientifically or technically.Scientists make sure that they reach an accurate observation of the world so they can agree with each other.I really think that they use the "scientific method" of reporting or gathering data.it first starts with observation through the use of the five senses. It pays to have sharp and keen senses of course, since they are the "midwives of intelligence".Then, they make a tentative hypothesis as their assumption which is followed by experimenting to check the accuracy and find out the mistakes. Finally, when it's already accurate, they form a conclusion to confirm their hypothesis.

Humanistic scholarship is a fun type of scholarship for me because you get to use your creativity and emotions which is normally related to subjectivity. This is frequently used by humanistic scholars who want to understand the differences of human responses. In understanding human responses, they have their own values or standards.

Social-scientific scholarship includes both scientific and humanistic scholarship. It is a social science because it talks about the behaviours of human beings. When observing people's behaviour, one should be like a scientist because he or she can accurately describe their personalities.

My Introduction to Communication

For the last two to three weeks, I was introduced to a very wonderful subject that is related to my course, and that is Communication 11. Communication is a basic tool for living life. Without it, how can we live? How can we send messages to one another? How can we express our thoughts and ideas? How can we receive important information from other people? As we can see, so many questions can be raised when we don't have a means to communicate to one another.

Before anything else, we have to know what communication is all about. Based from what I learned, "Communication is a social process in which individuals employ symbols to establish and interpret meaning in their environment". It is imperative to take note of the following keywords:social, process, meaning and environment.

When one hears the word social,it usually means that we need people to interact with. So,does this mean that we have to interact with people just to say we are communicating? Well, not neccessarily. What about those who are alone? Can we say that they are also communicating even though they aren't relating with people? Of course, they are still communicating, only to themselves. Now, I'm wondering why it is normally a "social process" when in fact you can communicate with yourself. The reason for this, I will discover and find out....

Communication is a process. From this keyword, one knows that it's changing, evolving and never-ending. Therefore, what we can do is to adapt and adjust to the fast-paced changes we encounter and experience in communication.

In communication, people, like us, use symbols to send a message to anyone. Words are used to represent these symbols. These symbols are further divided into two types: concrete and abstract. Concrete symbols represent an object that can be perceived by the senses. It means they're tangible. The abstract symbols can't be perceived by the senses because they represent an idea or thought, even a feeling(perhaps). I can probably say that they are either felt or imagined.

The "meaning" that is articulated by the sender is received by the other person, the "recipient". The meaning The receiver or recipient may interpret, understand and decipher the message in his or her own way. To make the messages or meaning very understandable to the receiver, the sender should therefore know what his message is all about, first. He or she should also get enough time to articulate his or her thoughts and ideas to the message meaningful.

Finally, the environment where communication happens should be taken into consideration. In this case, people should take note of the "situation" or background they are in. We need to take time to know the person's culture and understand where they are coming from.

Communication is really an amazing subject to take especially when it is related to the a student's course. There are many things about Communication that students, including me, have to know and discover. The communication theories that I'm about to encounter with my blockmates during our next discussion will help me communicate effectively and eloquently. I'm also hoping it will give me a more well-defined idea on why people have to communicate.
